Juniper
Au milieu des années 1990, il débute comme chanteur au sein du groupe de rock Juniper. En 1999, après quelques singles auto produits, le groupe s’apprête à signer chez Phonogram. Mais Rice décide de partir voyager en Europe, seul. Juniper, privé de son chanteur, se reconstitue sous le nom de Bell X1. À son retour, en 2000, Rice se met au travail et commence à écrire ce qui deviendra son premier album, O. Il enregistre un premier single, « The Blowers Daughter ». Il envoie une maquette au compositeur et producteur David Arnold, qui a travaillé avec Björk ou David Knopfler. Celui-ci est enthousiasmé et prend Rice sous son aile.
