Formé à Sydney en 2011, le groupe est composé de Luke Hemmings (chanteur principal, guitare), Michael Clifford (guitare, chœur), Calum Hood (basse, chant), Ashton Irwin (batterie, chœur).
Le groupe a d'abord été formé de Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford et Calum Hood, qui étudiaient tous dans la même école (le « Norwest Christian College »). Ils ont décidé de se réunir afin de poster des vidéos d'eux-mêmes sur YouTube, réalisant des reprises de chansons célèbres (leur reprise de la chanson de Chris Brown et Justin Bieber, Next to You a dépassé les 1 400 000 vues). Jugeant leur groupe « incomplet », ils firent passer des auditions à quelques jeunes, et c'est ainsi qu'Ashton Irwin (batteur), les rejoints le 3 décembre 2011, et que le groupe 5 Seconds Of Summer fut créé.
